Unicorn Companies Analysis

Companies attain unicorn status when they are valued at $1 billion. The term was first published by venture capitalist Aileen Lee in 2013 to represent the statistical rarity of such successful ventures. The dataset for this analysis was gotten from Maven playground, there are 1074 unicorn companies founded between 1919 to 2021 in this dataset. For this analysis, we are want to see how these unicorns are valued across industries, various companies and their valuation, focusing on companies with the highest valuation, how companies have attained Unicorn status over the years and Investors that fund these companies.
The analysis shows that there was steady increase in companies attaining unicorn status from the year 2000, this peaked in 2015 and began to go down after that period. Even though new companies are emerging, fewer companies were attaining Unicorn status.

The fintech industry has the highest number of companies with the highest amount in valuation and funding. Juuls Labs, a company in the consumer retail industry was valued at $38B and had raised funding of about $14B. Bytedance a company in the AI industry, was valued at $180B and had raised $8B in funding.


Looking at the total valuation of the companies, the fintech industry has the highest valuation of $882B followed by the Internet Software and Services industry with a valuation of$595B. E-Commerce and direct to consumers industry comes next with a valuation of $426B. This is followed by the AI industry with $377B.
The fintech industry has also raised the highest amount in funding, raising about $108B in funding. The E-Commerce industry has raised $74B in funding and the Internet Software Industry has raised $72B in funding. The industry with the least amount of valuation is the Travel industry, this industry was valued at $46B.

Conclusion:
The industry that raised the highest amount in funding, the fintech industry is the industry with the highest valuation.
The E-Commerce Industry that raised the second highest amount in funding is the third most valued industry.
JUUL labs, the company that raised the highest amount in funding is not the highest valued company. The highest valued company is bytedance with a valuation of $180B.
Bytedance which is in the AI industry is the most valued company with $180B. The AI industry is the 4th most valued company in this analysis.
The travel industry with the least amount in valuation ($46B), has raised about $12.6B in funding
